On Trend: Summer Staples

7.1.14

Sometimes my closet overwhelms me.

It’s organized by color, style, and season with shoes in boxes and pictures of each displayed neatly on the outside.  I have my accessories accessibly hanging cleanly and my sweaters folded like a department store on the shelves (for my favorite closet organizing tips visit here). And still, I stare at a closet full of clothes and get that feeling that I have nothing to wear.

Wear of the Week: Boom + Pencil Skirt

Image

Just as superheroes morph from everyday citizen to strength yielding lifesavers, the Boom sweatshirt can morph from comfy running-errand-casual to sophisticated yet flirty work attire.

Paired with a sleek pencil skirt adds an element of elegance and contrasts the quirkiness of the sweatshirt.

Add a high bun, heels, and a sparkle clutch and this superhero starts to take on a persona of its own!

Wear of the Week: Work to Happy Hour Booties + Shorts

K.I.S.S.

Keep It Simple, Stupid.

This is a mantra I learned in my broadcast journalism courses and I find that it can apply to a lot of things in life.  Sometimes I find myself repeating this as I stand agonizingly in front of my closet with “nothing to wear.”  I know darn well that I do, in fact, have a lot of things to wear.  It’s just that nothing is speaking to me.

I channeled the KISS method as I picked out the final outfit for this week’s Wear of the Week.  I paired a white button-up (a staple every woman should have in her closet) with a black cardigan and boyfriend shorts.  Super simple.  I used accessories to express the personality of the outfit, like this amazing floral bib necklace I recently purchased at the J. Crew outlet store.

This outfit works great for Happy Hour with friends, and if you are coming straight from work, swap out the shorts for black pants (or even better, pants with a pop of color like burgundy).  Paired with a sparkle clutch, this “simple” outfit starts to have a life of it’s own.

Wear of the Week: Booties + Skirt

Image

Guess what arrived yesterday… fall!  And it came with a roar.   The sun didn’t make an appearance all day, the wind blew nonstop, and the thermostat didn’t inch above 63 degrees.  I know this is only temporary, as I am sure there are many warm days ahead, but I will embrace it while it is here.

During these transitional weeks, I tend to gravitate toward clothes in darker colors that can be dressed for warm or cool weather alike, such as this black and cream floral skirt.  I initially thought today’s post would highlight this outfit as a warm weather ensemble, but once I noticed the brisk air outdoors, I added tights to make it more fall-weather appropriate.  Tights, scarves, and hats can all be quick but efficient add-ons to an outfit when an unexpected chill arrives.

Image

Paired with the always-versatile chambray shirt and black booties, this outfit celebrates fall while recognizing that summer isn’t far behind.  I contrasted the hippie-fringe booties by adding a preppy vibe with the chambray shirt buttoned to the very top.  The black bib necklace ties the look together and I wore a cocktail ring passed down from my grandma for a bit of flair.

It is easy to get in a style rut, especially at the end of a season. It’s not quite cool enough for your fall wardrobe, but your summer clothes are looking awfully stale.  There are the obvious places to look for wardrobe inspiration: Pinterest, fashion magazines, celebrity outfits… but those don’t always rekindle the dimming creative flame.

What I am Wearing: LA Fashion Market Part II

This is the time of year when I itch for fall weather. My summer clothes are starting to look dull and I all I want to do is throw on a cozy cold weather collection of hats, sweaters, boots, and scarves.  Since it is still August and summer is just getting started on the Southern California coast (thanks a lot, June Gloom that carried into July), I will have to settle for starting with a fall color palette.

Enter burgundy. Continue reading

On Trend: Cat Eye Sunglasses

Image

{One , Two , Three, Four, Five , Six}

So, the ’50s and ’60s called and said your welcome for the chic trend of cat eye sunglasses.  These beauties were made popular along the same time as poodle skirts and beehive hairdos.  Fortunately for us, only the sunglasses have made it back in style (could you imagine?!).  For the fall season, updates include bold colors and spunky patterns.
